The WEIRDEST thing is happening. I have been controlling my sweet tooth effortlessly lately!
It’s been so effortless that I didn’t even realize it was happening. Until I started doing a blog post brainstorm and I thought it would be cool to do a post about trying to curb a sweet tooth when I realized HOLY CRAP, I haven’t been having trouble with my sweet tooth lately!
I can’t even really pinpoint when I made such big progress on my sweet tooth, but I do recall around the holidays all the sweets there were to eat just did not have the same appeal. And since then I think it’s been a slow decline…
So I started thinking of everything I was doing that could contribute. Did a little research. Tracked myself for a few days. And here’s what I’ve come up with!
10 Healthy Ways to Distract or Satisfy A Sweet Tooth
- Drink fruit-infused water. I’ll warn you right now: almost half of these are just ways to hydrate while kind of tricking your sweet tooth. That seems to be by FAR my most effective tactic. And it makes perfect sense because a lot of the time when you’re dehydrated your body will mistake it for hunger, and your body craves sugar when you’re hungry (because energy!) But keeping a beautiful pitcher of water with fruit in the fridge is such a natural way to make hydration appealing. AND the sweetness that the fruit imparts can satisfy a small sweet tooth.
- Kombucha. I have been drinking a LOT of kombucha lately. Like, at least a glass a day. (But no more than 2 because you don’t want to overdo it.) There is some sugar in kombucha so it can absolutely satisfy a sweet tooth. But it’s a pretty reasonable amount and typically comes from juice or honey, so that’s far better than a lot of sweets. But in my research, I read that eating a diet high in fermented foods can actually help kick sugar cravings! Plus it hydrates you. So I think kombucha has a couple good short-term AND a couple long-term effects to help you beat that sweet tooth.
- Eat a small protein-heavy “sweet” treat. I have a ton of recipes for snacks or breakfasts that are mildly sweetened protein treats. Like my coconut white chocolate macadamia nut protein cookies I just posted. Just a small bite or two doesn’t have much sugar at all, but enough to satisfy that sweet tooth. But treats like this are also full of protein and usually fiber too, so they’ll keep you FAR more satiated than a sweet treat. A few of my other favorites are: homemade almond protein bars, peanut butter protein blondies, or any of my breakfast truffles.
- Have some dates or dried fruit. On the same note as breakfast truffles (because their main ingredient is dates or sometimes dried fruit), have a date or two or a few bites of dried fruit. This is just a healthier alternative to eating a dessert, of course. But if you stick to unsweetened options, all of the sugar is natural and comes with a hefty dose of fiber so your body can digest the sugar more slowly.
- Mix up some BCAAs. I told you a lot of these involve hydrating! I love mixing up a bottle of BCAAs when my sweet tooth is really crazy because they are artificially sweetened and flavored. So they really taste like you’re having dessert. I keep these watermelon ones at home all the time and sometimes a bonus flavor to mix it up.
- Distract yourself for 20 minutes. You might just be bored, incorrectly think you’re hungry, or sugar got on your mind somehow. Do ANYTHING to distract yourself for 20 minutes and see if the sweet tooth just goes away. If it doesn’t, then distract it with one of these healthier options 😉
- Eat fruit. Nature’s candy! And probably the healthiest way to actually satisfy a sweet tooth. Of course, if your taste buds are used to candy and baked goods, fruit may not seem as satisfying. But the longer you work toward satisfying or distracting your sweet tooth with healthier options, the more fruit will work!
- Drink hot tea. My last “hydrate” option. I love drinking tea to distract a sweet tooth because there are SO MANY OPTIONS. You can buy teas that actually taste like desserts and add a little honey to REALLY satisfy a sweet tooth. Or you can just have a cup of plain herbal tea as a distraction. I love spearmint tea so much that it will often distract my sweet tooth. Plus you can have it hot or iced. Yay, options!
- Eat something pickled. This is a weird one! When I have a really crazy sweet tooth, sometimes I’ll eat some pickled ginger or just plain pickles. It seems to knock my sweet tooth out. I tried to look up if that’s common (seems like it’s semi-common) and why it works (not sure.) But give it a try!
- Go for a walk. This is partly to distract yourself and see if your sweet tooth is out of boredom. But it also can help if your body wants energy (which can totally cause a sweet tooth.) Those of us with desk jobs might have a stronger sugar craving when our bodies are tired of sitting down all day. Going for a quick walk can boost our energy and maybe kick that craving.
Of course there are a ton of other ways to beat a sweet tooth. But hopefully you get the gist with these ideas! Make sure you’re not hungry, thirsty, or bored. If you aren’t and you still have a sugar craving, then maybe one of those healthier options to satisfy it will do the trick for you!
