This. GRAVY.
Oh, man.
This stuff is liquid gold.
Preston had some really peppery simple but incredible gravy for brunch awhile back, and it’s been on my list to remake.
This Saturday was the first time in a VERY long time that we had all morning to be lazy and sleep in. We had a lovely slow Saturday morning on the couch and I made biscuits and this simple peppered gravy for breakfast.
What did you do this Saturday morning? What’s your favorite lazy weekend breakfast?
Obviously you could use this gravy for a whole lot more than pouring over biscuits. It would be perfect for your Thanksgiving meal! But I warn you – it’s not a “healthy” kind of gravy. It’s a “maybe add a little more butter” kind of gravy. AKA the perfect kind for lazy Saturday mornings or holiday meals.
- 1/4 C butter
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 1/2 t salt
- 1/2 t black pepper (plus lots more to taste)
- 3 T all purpose flour
- 2 C vegetable broth
- Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for about 3 minutes. Salt and pepper the onion, and stir until the onions are turning translucent. Add the flour and cook for about 2 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Slowly whisk in the vegetable broth and stir until well combined. Let the gravy simmer for about 10 minutes, whisking occasionally, until it reaches the consistency you prefer.
- Give it a taste and add as much black pepper as you like. I probably used about 1 1/2 teaspoons because I was going for very peppery. ๐
I tried out Gimme Some Oven’s 3-ingredient coconut oil biscuits for these and LOVED them. New favorite recipe for sure. I used butter instead of coconut oil and used her recipe for self-rising flour, and they came together in no time. (Preston was super impressed.)
