I meant to post this sleepytime vanilla milk steamer probably…. two or three years ago? It just never made it up. It’s one of those almost-too-simple-to-post recipes, one that I always whip up when I’m not thinking about blogging or taking pictures. Plus it’s usually at night when the sun is down and the picture-taking light is lost.
Perfect lighting for pictures or not, it’s time to post this awesome easy recipe.
It’s just warm vanilla milk. Growing up, my mom often made this simple recipe for me and my sister. Milk + a little sugar (OK, it was a lot of sugar when I was old enough to make it myself) + vanilla extract. Microwaved.
Now I love the process of making a slightly more “grown up” or gourmet version. But really, it’s still warm vanilla milk. It’s simple but out of this world, and a fantastic drink when you need a little help winding down for the night.
I thought I’d include a “recipe” for the quickie version for you too:
1 C unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1/2 t vanilla extract
1 t granulated sugar or pure maple syrup
Heat mug of milk in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, depending on how powerful your microwave is, and then add vanilla and syrup and stir well.
Here’s the vanilla bean version:
- 2 C unsweetened vanilla almond or soy milk
- vanilla beans from 1 vanilla pod
- 2 t granulated sugar or maple syrup
- Combine everything in a small saucepan and heat over medium-low heat until steaming. When you add the vanilla beans, throw the pod in too and all the beans that stick inside will come out in the warm milk.
My favorite couple variations!
spike it // a big splash of bourbon sure will help you sleep! or try Frangelico, amaretto, or your favorite sweet liqueur.
add cardamom // smash a whole cardamom pod and throw it in the pot with everything too. LOVE that extra flavor.
Grab a mug of this, curl up with a book, and sweet dreams 🙂
