Mango & Greens Smoothie - Flora Foodie

Mango & Greens Smoothie

I see smooth bright beautiful green smoothies on other food blogs and am overwhelmed by jealousy over one thing: Vitamix!  I don’t even have a proper blender.  I’ve got my trusty immersion  blender who does so much work for such a tiny guy!  And there’s my boyfriend’s Magic Bullet.  It hates me.  Clearly it favors him, and chooses to work properly for him but almost never for me.

It’s especially difficult to blend greens into a smoothie with a crummy blender, but sometimes a fruit-and-greens smoothie seems like the perfect breakfast!

Usually, I make do by either juicing greens and then adding them to a smoothie or steaming my greens before adding them.  But then I either lose the fiber or I’m left with a slightly odd taste and downright ugly color in my smoothie.  Is it so much to want the fresh bright green color and use the whole food in my smoothie?

No, it’s not.

One day last week I was in one of those moods.  You food-blog-readers know what I mean.  I thought I’d look at new posts on my few favorite blogs, and the next thing I knew two hours had rolled by and I’d just stared at page after page of food porn.  But on one of those pages was a perfect solution to my green smoothie dilemma!

Since I found this in a blur of blog-reading, I have no idea where to relocate it to thank the genius!  So my thanks for this fantastic nugget of information is to rave about it.

So here’s the trick – one that makes even my stubborn Magic Bullet work like a charm: blend the liquids with the greens before adding anything else.  Blend thoroughly until smooth.  For a pretty long time.  Then add all your other ingredients.  So simple!
But so perfect!  Perfectly smooth, perfectly green, and all the fiber.  Spinach for breakfast that tastes amazing.  My breakfasts have just gone up a notch. Here’s one of my favorite green smoothie recipes, new and improved!

serves 2
3 C baby spinach
1 C frozen mangoes
1/2 frozen banana
1 1/2 C unsweetened vanilla soy milk
2 T flax seeds, freshly ground
1/4 C fruit juice juice (my favorite is guava – the all-natural guava puree kind – no disgustingly sweet and unnaturally pink stuff here)

Puree spinach and non-dairy milk until very smooth.  Add everything else and blend.

Mmmmmm.

I love smoothies! especially ones that include greens 🙂 I might have to try this with GT’s kombucha guava tea. Are those glass dharma straws? I’ve been wanting to get some.

Wow, you’re full of great ideas! I love that guava kombucha, it would go so well with mango. And yes, they are dharma straws – so much fun, and eco-friendly!
