My coworker told me about this fruit salad (which she gets at the state fair of all places!) last week – cucumber, watermelon, mango, and jicama with a chile lime salt sprinkled on top. I think I just about drooled on my desk. Then promptly updated my grocery list.
Since then, I’ve mentioned my upcoming posts to a few people, none of whom were surprised to hear about this chile lime salt combo. Apparently it’s a fairly common Mexican snack that I was not aware of, and you can buy pre-made chile lime salt at the market.
So I looked around, but to no avail. I tend to go to smaller markets, and didn’t see this stuff at my usual grocery haunts.
But it occurred to me that a homemade chile lime salt is probably a fairly simple, especially with my well-stocked spice drawer!
So I don’t promise authenticity, but here’s a delicious fruit salad for a summer snack.
serves 4
zest of 1 lime
1/2 t mild chile powder (I used ancho)
1/8 t ground cayenne
3/4 t kosher salt
1 mango
2 Persian cucumbers
about 1/8 baby watermelon
about 1/4 medium jicama
Mix together first four ingredients. Slice or cube your fruit however you like. Sprinkle chili lime salt on top.
Tough, I know.
