Wow, it’s been absolutely forever since I’ve done a New Flora post. I thought I had given them up, but lately I’ve been missing them. That’s okay, right?
A few times lately I’ve thought about doing a New Flora post to introduce y’all to some new-to-me (and hopefully you too) piece of produce that I find. But at the first bite of a Barhi date, I knew it had to be done. Okay, maybe it was more like the third or fourth bite because for the first few, I just was so focused on enjoying all the amazing things happening in my mouth.
That sounded weird, didn’t it?
I don’t care.
Friends, if you are a vegan who has been missing caramel, then this is the thing for you. These dates taste like caramels. Pretty close texture, too. I’m not even remotely kidding. I passed a date stand at the Davis Farmer’s Market this weekend, and stopped when I saw the name of a date I’d never heard of before. As soon as I told the nice man running the booth that I didn’t know of such a date, he said “These are the best. These are like a multi-vitamin that tastes like caramel.” Yes, sir. Nailed it. There’s no need to go mixing unhealthy combos of margarine and sugar or coconut cream together when you can have a whole food nutrient-packed date that is so darn close to a melt-in-your-mouth soft caramel.
I know, I know, dates don’t photograph all that well. I did the best I could.
Now that winter is thankfully winding down, I am working on losing some extra winter weight I packed on (and I’m guessing I’m not the only one), and these are officially my guiltless sweet tooth killer.
Okay, did I sell you? If you’re in the Sacramento area, I highly recommend you head on over to the Siegried’s Dates stand at the Davis Farmer’s Market (I’ll be scouting other markets to find out where else they sell.) But the rest of you, don’t worry! I did my homework, and found that you can buy them here and here and here and here (later in the year). I haven’t ordered any of those so I can’t vouch for them (thus the many many options.)
